Your dental exam is a head-to-toe check of your mouth, not just a count of cavities. During a comprehensive exam, your dentist will:
Afterward, your dentist explains what they found, answers your questions and recommends any treatment, with no surprises.
There is no single schedule that fits everyone. How often you need X-rays depends on your age, your risk of cavities and gum disease, and your dental history. New patients usually need a full set to establish a baseline. After that, your dentist recommends X-rays only when they will provide useful information.
Even careful brushing and flossing miss some spots. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar that sticks to the teeth and can only be removed with professional instruments. A routine cleaning includes:
Most patients find a routine cleaning comfortable. If your teeth or gums are sensitive, let us know so we can adjust our approach.
A routine cleaning is preventive care for healthy gums. If your exam shows signs of gum disease, such as deeper gum pockets, bleeding or bone loss, a routine cleaning is not enough to remove the bacteria and tartar below the gumline.
In that case, your dentist may recommend a deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing. It cleans the root surfaces beneath the gums and helps them reattach to the teeth. It is often followed by more frequent periodontal maintenance visits. Learn more about gum disease treatment in Mount Pleasant.
Many patients do well with an exam and cleaning about every six months. That is a common starting point, not a rule. Your dentist may recommend more frequent visits if you:
We will recommend a visit schedule based on what we see, not a one-size-fits-all calendar.
Cavities and gum disease usually develop without pain. By the time a tooth hurts, the problem often needs a larger filling, a crown or a root canal. Regular visits let us find decay while it is small, treat gum inflammation before it damages bone and keep existing dental work in good shape.
Your oral health is also linked to your overall health. Gum disease has been associated with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, so healthy gums are part of taking care of your whole body.
Depending on your needs, your dentist may recommend additional preventive treatments during your checkup:
We see patients of all ages, and many families schedule their checkups together. Early, positive dental visits help children get comfortable in the dental chair and let us monitor how their teeth are developing. For kids, checkups also focus on cavity prevention, brushing habits and how adult teeth are coming in.
Exams and cleanings are part of our broader general dentistry in Mount Pleasant, which also includes fillings and other everyday care.
Your first visit is a little longer than a typical checkup because we are getting to know you. Expect a full health history review, a complete exam, a baseline set of X-rays as needed and a cleaning—or a plan for one if gum treatment is needed first. It is also a chance to ask questions and share any concerns, including dental anxiety.
To save time, review our new patient information and complete your patient forms before your appointment. Bring your insurance card, a photo ID and a list of medications. You can also meet our dentists ahead of your visit.
We accept Delta Dental, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Aetna and Guardian dental plans. Many plans include benefits for preventive visits like exams and cleanings; coverage varies. Financing through Cherry, including 0% financing options and four-payment plans, is available for other treatment, subject to approval.

A routine exam and cleaning usually takes about an hour. A first visit may take longer because it includes a full health history and a baseline set of X-rays.
Most patients find routine cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums, you may feel some pressure or tenderness. Tell your hygienist, who can work more gently or use a numbing gel if needed.
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and just below the gumline in a healthy mouth. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, treats gum disease by cleaning the root surfaces deeper below the gums. Your exam determines which you need.
Bleeding gums are often an early sign of gum inflammation, usually caused by plaque along the gumline. Consistent brushing, daily flossing and regular cleanings often improve it. If bleeding continues, your dentist will check for gum disease.
Yes. During your exam, your dentist checks your mouth, tongue, throat and neck for unusual sores, patches or lumps. Early detection makes a significant difference, and the screening adds only a few minutes to your visit.
Absolutely. Many patients come to us after a long gap. We will not lecture you. We will check where things stand, explain your options and help you get back on track at a pace that works for you.
